A Chart Of Ye West-Indies Or The Islands Of America In The North Sea &C. Being Ye Present Seat Of War. Published in The London Magainze v. 9, London , 1740

A very good and detailed map of West Indies extending north from the Carolinas, Florida to Terra Firma (parts of Colombia) in South America . Mexico is shown as New Spain. Interesting observations such as “The Tract from the Gallions of Old Spain” (treasure hunters alert!) as well as notes on the Galleons typical route patterns, duration of sailing days etc. Inset map showing La Vera Cruz upper right.

This map differs slightly from Moll’s map of the same title in other publications as this has the Bowles imprint upper left. The Bowles publishing firm bought Moll’s copperplates after his death in 1732. This is the later edition that was issued to show the theater of war for the so-called War of Jenkins’s Ear. Relations deteriorated between Spain and England over logging issues in Honduras and the perception by the English that the Spanish were restricting their access to the slave trade in the West Indies. This friction was aggravated by a continuing dispute over the border between Spanish Florida and Georgia. Prime Minister Walpole declared war on Spain in October, 1739. Jolly, David C.
