Published in Henry Schoolcraft’s “Information Respecting the History, Condition and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States” Philadelphia, 1852. Towns, villages, military forts, Indian settlements and missions are noted. Seth Eastman was a soldier turned artist who accurately portrayed the scenery of the emerging American Western landscape. He was considered by some ” the best painted of Indian life the country has produced” rivaling or surpassing George Catlin whose Indian Gallery paintings were sweeping the country at the time. Eastman’s works included illustrations for Schoolcraft’s monumental 6 volume work “Indian Tribes” in which this map appears. Not only was he a skilled artist, but an accomplished draughtsman publishing in 1837 a “Treatise on Topographical Drawing” Map Condition: Folds as issued otherwise very good.
