Description

Commemorative cotton, linen and silk handkerchiefs were first fabricated during the Revolutionary Era but became more mass produced towards the end of the 19th Century. Subject matters ranged from momentous events, political genres and military themes which frequently glorified epic battles, or lionized war heroes. Often they were commercially produced for soldiers to carry with them as mementos, or for them to send home to loved ones. Others were produced as fundraising efforts, much like war bonds, to help fallen soldiers’ families, or families left without a reliable source of income when their loved ones went overseas. Better quality cotton with more elaborate designs and multi-colours as well as silk handkerchiefs command higher prices.
