Description

Published in Ptolemy’s “Geographia” c. 1574-1599.

An ancient view of South East Asia showing the the Ganges River through to the Thailand, the Malay Peninsula and various islands in the Indian Ocean. The Himalayan Mountains feature in the north. An interesting feature to note is that Ptolemy believed that a great southern continent existed so that in fact he noted the Indian Ocean was landlocked. The whole area was rich in resources as noted by Ptolemy-cinnamon from Cirradia (above Burma) and down the coast “Argentea Regio” a kingdom of silver. The port of Sabana is thought to have been where Singapore now lies.
