Description
Published in ” The Gentleman’s Magazine” London, 1778.
A detailed map of the island of Tobago in the Lesser Antilles showing ports, mountain ranges, bays and settlement divisions. In 1628, Dutch settlers established the first European settlement in Tobago and shifted primarily between Dutch, English and Spanish rule although colonization attempts were made by French, Swedish and even Polish/Lithuanian settlers. In fact the island changed hands a whopping 33 times, the most in Caribbean history before it was finally ceded to the British in 1814. It finally gained it’s independence in 1962 and became a republic (twinned with Trinidad) in 1976.
